The Great Sunflower Project


The Great Sunflower Project Saturday, May 22, 10 am – 2 pm
By growing sunflowers, then watching and recording the bees at your sunflowers, you will be part of “The Great Sunflower Project”. Your participation will help scientists understand the challenges that bees are facing today. The Amoskeag Fishways will supply the pots, soil, seeds, and bee guides with project instructions. Bee natural history programs will occur on the hour throughout the day. All ages welcome. Pre registration required. Cost: $8 for materials per participant.
Activity is located at the Amoskeag Fishways Center in Manchester, NH.

Fish Fest at Amokeag Fishways!


Fish Fest: May 15, 11 am - 3 pm

Fish Fest celebrates Merrimack River fish- all the fish, all the time, as only we can do at the Amoskeag Fishways. We will have fish crafts, fish viewing, fish hats, fish games and special musical guests. There will also be a special Native American fish blessing. No pre registration required.General Admission: $3 per person, $6 per family (parents & their own children under age 18)

The Amoskeag Fishways Public Programs:




Your entire family will enjoy these fun, interactive, and educational public programs offered year round at The Amoskeag Fishways. With some programs geared towards young children and others toward the young at heart, there is a program for everyone. Call and register for a public program today!



Family Friday Nights - Programs are for all ages and focus on the Merrimack River and its watershed. Cost: $5 per family unless otherwise noted. Pre-registration is required.



Fishways Fundays - Fishways Fundays are for children ages 4 to 5 accompanied by an adult. Cost: $5 per family. Preregistration is required.



Summer Vacation Series - Programs are broken up into 3 age groups: Explorers Series (ages 5-6), Adventurers Series (ages 7-9), and Voyagers Series (ages 10-13). Explorers and Adventurer groups meets once a week. Participants can attend one of two sessions per day, 10 a.m.-noon or 1:30-3:30 p.m. Adults attendance is not required. Cost: $8 per session or $30 for all four sessions.

Special Events - Open to all ages. No registration required.

New Classes for Homeschoolers River Ecology Series for Homeschoolers - Series is for children in grade levels four through eight accompanied by an adult. Group meets 1-3 pm. Cost: $6 per session/ $20 for all four sessions. This four-part series explores concepts of hydrology, living systems, water quality and conservation through direct observation and hands-on activities.

Family Friday Nights:

FIN tastic Voyage May 7, 7-8:30 pm
Some of our Merrimack River fish travel amazing distances. Find out which go the farthest as we play fish games, make a fish craft, and look for migrating fish in our ladder.



Eel Eve June 18 , 7-8 pm
On the final evening of fish season, we’ll see if we can spot any American Eels in our underwater viewing windows. We’ll learn about the lifecycle of this catadromous fish and find out why they swim all the way to the Sargasso Sea to lay their eggs.


Fishways Fundays:



Incredible Journey: A Fish Season Tour May 26, 10-11 am or 1-2 pm
Join us for a tour to learn about the incredible migration of some Merrimack River fish. We’ll discover what makes fish special and which fish make this difficult journey. We’ll even view them up close in our fish ladder.



Flower Power June 23, 10-11 am or 1-2 pm
What makes flowers so special? Why are they so pretty? What do they need to grow? Discover these answers and more as we search the Fishways for spring flowers and plant our own flower seeds to take home.

They're slimy, but superb! Get acquainted with some live New Hampshire amphibians.



July 15, 16: Critter Quest
Where do amphibians, fish and other critters hang out? Search a local habitat to find them yourself. Group meets at Fishways, then adults must transport children to site.



July 22, 23: Fun With Fish
Meet a variety of Merrimack fish up close and personal, fashion a fish craft, and play fish games.



July 29, 30: Adventures in the Woods
Explore the local woods with an emphasis on FUN! Group meets at Fishways, then adults must transport children to site.


Voyagers Series

Each Thursday we will embark on an all day adventure exploring the natural wonders of the Merrimack River and Great Bay watershed. Cost: $28 per session/$105 for all four sessions

July 10: Learn to Paddle
Spend a day on the Merrimack River learning to paddle a canoe

July 17: Let’s Go Fishing
We’ll bring the poles- you bring your luck, as we spend the day fishing

July 24: Learn to Paddle Part II
Improve your paddling technique as we canoe on beautiful Newfound Lake

July 31: Great Bay Day!
Explore two sides of New Hampshire's Great Bay, climb a fire tower for a bird's eye view, and enjoy a special program at the Sandy Point Discovery Center

July 13: Learn to Paddle in the Watershed
Learn how to paddle a canoe on beautiful Newfound Lake.

July 20: Creature Quest
Discover how many different water creatures we can find in one day.

July 27: Let's Go Fishing
We'll bring the poles- you bring your luck, as we spend the day fishing!

Aug. 3: Merrimack Meets the Sea
What creatures live where the river meets the sea? We'll be treated to a special program at the Joppa Flats Audubon Sanctuary.

Special Events:

The 12th Annual Lamprey Appreciation Day Saturday, June 5, 10 am – 2 pm
Often mistaken for eels, sea lamprey are the oldest and coolest fish in the Merrimack River. Discover the fascinating life and history of this ‘sucker’ fish during this one-of-a-kind event. Presentations featuring live sea lamprey will run every half hour. Get sucked into the fun and hold a live, three-foot long sea lamprey! Cost: $2 per person or $5 per family (parents & their own children under age 18) No registration required

Fancy Nancy: Poet Extraordinaire!



I just found out that April is National Poetry Month...I didn't even know we had a National Poetry Month! Aynway, my friend Shannon emailed me the details to share on Resourceful Mom and it looks like a lot of fun!
